What Is Larp? A Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)

Larp (Live Action Role Playing) is a live role-playing game where participants embody characters and collectively create a story. Sounds like theatre? There's one key difference: no audience, no script to memorize, and you decide what your character does.

Below are the questions we hear most often — usually in the car park, ten minutes before someone's first game.

Do I need acting skills? No. Larp isn't a film audition. Most games start with workshops where you'll learn your character, rules, and safety mechanics.

How long does a game last? From 2 hours (chamber larps — intimate games in a single room) to several days (outdoor larps with accommodation). At Larp Space in Częstochowa, games usually run from a few hours to a full weekend.

Is it safe? Yes. Modern larps have extensive safety mechanics. A safe word lets you pause or de-escalate at any time. There are designated out-of-game areas and people you can walk up to at any moment.

Who are larps for? One game can bring together a lawyer, a programmer and a high-school teacher — and after three hours none of them remembers who does what for a living. That's probably the best answer we have. Larps also work well for birthdays, stag or hen parties, and team building at work.

What is Larp Space? A building in Częstochowa designed for larps from the very first sketch — not a function room you can convert into one. 198 m²: a 77 m² main hall and two sci-fi apartments (110 m²) sleeping 20 people. Fifteen lighting zones, seven audio zones, fog, Loxone automation. Gated parking, a courtyard with a grill. We hire it out exclusively — no outsider walks into the middle of your game.

Where is Larp Space? Częstochowa, ul. Zaciszańska 5 (Silesian Voivodeship). About a 25-minute walk from Częstochowa Stradom station, an hour from Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport via the A1 motorway. From Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Łódź and Katowice — 2–3 hours' drive.

In larp terms this is not a random address. The Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska region has hosted Orkon, one of Poland's oldest conventions, for over 30 years.

What does "larp" mean? A mini glossary Larping simply means taking part in larps, and a larper is a game participant. A chamber larp is an intimate game in a single room, usually a few hours. A larp is not tabletop RPG — in role-playing games the story is told in words, while in a larp you physically embody your character: you walk, talk and act as them. It is not airsoft either, where scoring matters — in a larp a well-told story wins, not the score.
